Your feet learn a staircase in about two steps and then stop listening. That is why one stair a little taller than the others can catch almost anyone: the stumble isn’t carelessness, it’s trust, extended to the third step on the evidence of the first two. Most of the time that trust is a gift. It’s what lets you carry a full cup up the stairs while thinking about something else entirely.
