Thoughts, no. 259

The clocks here went back an hour this morning. On Lord Howe Island, a speck of New South Wales about 600 km out in the Tasman Sea, the change is half an hour, the only one of its kind I can find. For the cooler months the island sits half an hour ahead of Sydney. Then in October Sydney jumps a full hour, the island jumps thirty minutes, and the two arrive at exactly the same time. The islanders have said they try to stay in step with the rest of the state, and a whole hour would only overshoot. Most clock changes claim to be about the sun. This one seems to be about half the sun and half Sydney.
