The black middle of your eye is named after a doll. Latin pupilla meant a little girl, or a little doll, and the Romans gave the word to the dark centre of the eye because of what you find there when you lean close to someone: a tiny figure of yourself, looking back. Greek did the same with korē, girl. So the name was never really about the eye. It was about the small visitor in it. And you can only see her from about the distance at which people kiss or tell secrets, which means whoever first named it had been, at least once, that close to somebody.
