Thoughts, no. 159
In 1904 Lizzie Magie patented a board game meant to show people what was wrong with landlords. The Landlord’s Game came with two sets of rules: in one, players grew rich by charging rent until everyone else was ruined; in the other, whenever anyone created wealth, every player was rewarded. You were supposed to play the first, feel how it went, and prefer the second. The first is the one that survived, as Monopoly, and in 1935 Parker Brothers bought her patent for $500. The game still teaches her lesson, every single time. Only to whoever is losing.
